bulletin note from Sunday, October 6, 2013
Each year on the fourth of July the Nathan’s Famous Hot Dog Company sponsors a hot dog eating contest at Coney Island, NY. In 2013 Joey Chestnut of California won the competition for the seventh year in a row, setting a new record by eating 69 hot dogs and buns in just ten minutes. (The second runner up ate 51.) For the ladies, Sonya Thomas, a petite Virginian, consumed 37 hot dogs in the 10 minutes allotted. According to news reports, Chestnut consumed over 20,000 calories during his eating spree!
The Bible represents itself as the food of the believer; his milk, meat, and fruit. Many Christians consume the Word of God like Joey-a large quantity at once, and then a long span without it. Better if we make its consumption a daily practice. The benefits are far greater, and the appetite for it grows. The Kings of Israel were instructed to copy out their own copy of the Word of God and to read it. The Bible says of itself, “Seek ye out of the book of the LORD, and read:” Isaiah 34:16. Set your table daily with the good food of God’s Word!
