It was certainly a help and blessing to all of us who were able to be under the ministry of Pastor Troy Dorrell at the Purposeful Parenting session and/or the Couple’s Retreat last week. Brother Dorrell and his wife Teri were used of God to be a great help to all of us. One truth that Pastor Dorrell pointed out in regard to parenting was how often the unhappiness and lack of self-control seen in children can be traced back to the parents and their own personal indulgences.
He illustrated with the lives of men God had used and blessed; among them, Eli the priest and David the King. Both of these had some children who were a grief of mind to their parents, and who turned their backs upon God. The Scriptures reveal to us that these men had areas of their lives where they were unrestrained and surrendered to indulgences. They failed to restrain their children, in part, because they failed to restrain themselves.
My father was a heavy smoker who used unfiltered Lucky Strike cigarettes, or else rolled his own. He told his kids he’d whip us if he ever caught us smoking. But 3 out of 5 of us got hooked on smoking. The old adage, “Do as I say, not as I do,” doesn’t work. Disciplining our children actually begins at disciplining ourselves. Let’s get with it!
There is a 4 lesson CD series on Purposeful Parenting the Dorrells have put together, and it is full of practical Bible principles that apply to all areas of life and not just parenting. Let us know in the church office if you want that series. They make it available for $15.00 for the set.
