Life Is What You Make It

God holds you accountable for your own decisions. Not your friends’; not your parents’; not your enemies’.  You are as close to God right now as you want to be. You might think, “No… I’d like to be closer to God, it’s just that…” You’re fooling yourself. Your life is […]

Youth Night Teaches ME About Song-Leading

February 28th, 2016

Last Wednesday was youth night. You know what that means…a teen song-leader.
What I always do with the guys who are preparing to lead singing is go over the whole list of expectations for leading singing. It’s more than waving your arms and announcing the hymn numbers. Song leading is about…leading the congregation in songs! Sounds basic, right? But think about it…leading the congregation is about setting the expectation of what the music should be and do. Leading the congregation is about setting the tone for the mood of the worship. Leading the congregation is about modeling what you’re expecting.
So I go through all that with the guys, “Speak up. Direct big. Sing out. Think about your songs. Communicate the truth…”
And then I think, “Wait…if I’M expecting this of THEM…what about ME?! Do I do this?”
Do you ever do that? Expect MORE from someone else than you do of
yourself? Ouch!
So I get MY monthly gut-check through the youth night training times with the guys.
However, what about you? Have you ever thought of yourself as a song-leader?
You are.
You’re assisting in leading the music of our church every Sunday morning. You help set the tone of the worship portion of the service. You model what the music should be and do for and to a Christian. You are the front-facing leader in music. While the song-leader might be the one waving his arms, everyone on the platform has an important role in leading the music.
So, keep up the GOOD work! It does more than you’ll ever know.
