Periodic Reminders

Half the Old Testament is the word Remember. No, that’s not true. It’s 48%. I just rounded up. As Israel forgot, so do we. Today’s insert is a simple reminder of some of the standards we work to maintain as we sing for the Lord. My prayer is that you […]

Comments on American Culture 2013

July 9th, 2013

-bulletin note from Sunday, July 7, 2013

Sadly, we now find ourselves under the influence of a Supreme Court comprised primarily of those who have divorced themselves from 200 years of more or less faithful adherence to the biblically inspired principles of our constitutional republic. The majority’s recent disoriented and self-contradicting decisions seem designed to push America further and faster into the cesspool of a godless society. In a recent book entitled Our Godless Constitution, the authors contend that the influence of the Bible is negligible in the lives of the founding fathers. This contention of theirs is made despite the fact they give no documentation or source references for their outlandish claims! Flying in the face of the premise of their “fairy tale” is an extensive 10 year project completed recently, which traced to the source literally every traceable quote in all the writing of the founding fathers. Not surprising to us is that by far and away, the single most quoted source in all their works was the King James Bible! Fully 34% of their quoted material came from the Bible. No other of the numerous sources quoted even came close.

Yet, America hasn’t drifted toward godless Socialism because we have a Supreme Court which shows an obvious disregard for God. Our Nation is where it is because of the fact there are so many who claim to be Christians, without regard for God! A godless culture gets no challenge from a half-hearted, light-headed, self-loving brand of “Christianity.” Like you, I’d also like for the Lord to begin judging America at the level of the Supreme Court and the politicians and the lawyers, but the Word of God states that judgment begins at the house of God.

We Christians must live like Christians ought to live. It’s also true that the good that comes to a nation from God begins at the house of God, among the people of God. I realize that to be a committed Christian these days almost means you are “counter-culture” because culture has largely turned from God. Now, don’t grow out your hair, tie-dye your tee-shirts, buy a VW bus, start smoking dope and listening to the Maharishi…the guys who did that in the 60’s and 70’s are the ones running the country into the ditch now! No, our “counter-culture” revolution ought to be characterized by godly living, Bible reading, loving God’s house, God’s people, God’s commands, and God’s ways. We ought to be a people who look, talk, sing, walk, act, respond, and live differently than the culture around us. We ought to be a people trying to change the culture, one soul won at a time!
