Periodic Reminders

Half the Old Testament is the word Remember. No, that’s not true. It’s 48%. I just rounded up. As Israel forgot, so do we. Today’s insert is a simple reminder of some of the standards we work to maintain as we sing for the Lord. My prayer is that you […]

Once Upon a Non-Time…

November 25th, 2016

Dec. 1 – Once Upon a Non-Time…

Each day of December will feature a new story about Jesus Christ, written simply but conveying profound truths. I couldn’t find a Christian Bible-based advent-type of storybook, so I’m writing these stories each morning for our family devotions around breakfast.

Most stories start like this, “Once upon a time…”

Not this one. It can’t. It’s impossible.

Instead, this story starts like this:

Once upon a non-time, there is God.

That’s a funny way to start a story, but that’s how the greatest story ever told is told. It’s a story about God, but it’s not a story about a God that used to be. It’s a story about the God who is. Right now, He still is. But I’m getting ahead of myself. Let me back up…

Once upon a non-time, there was eternity. Eternity is not a long time ago. Nope. It’s not a very long time ago, either. Eternity is… forever.

God never started. He was always there.

Did you know that God knows you? And he loves you?

God is SO big and powerful, that all He had to do was talk, “Let there be _________” — you fill in the blank. Let there be light? If God said it, there was light. Let there be trees? Yep. God said that. And there were trees. And stars and birds and people and mountains and water and… everything!

God is powerful! He has ALL the power in all the universe.

And did you know that God knows who you are? And God loves you? And… God has a plan for your life?

In fact, way back before God formed the world, He knew who you were, and He had a plan for your whole life. He knew you’d be reading this story today! He knew what you’d be doing yesterday, and tomorrow.

Even before He created the world, He had a big master plan for the whole world. He planned for everything to be good, and everyone to be with Him.

When men sinned, God’s plan had to include a perfect fix for everyone who wanted it. He gave people a gift–a perfect gift of a perfect eternity with Him.

This gift was His Son. God gave us His Son as a gift to take away all the sin of the world. He gave us this gift in the form of a baby, about 2,000 years ago in a manger in Bethleh…

Wait a minute. There I go again, getting ahead of myself.

Let’s save the rest of the story for later.

Dec. 2 – Gods Not Rude!

When you love someone, do you want them to love you back?

If you love someone, do you tell them and show them that you love them?

Or, when they try to talk to you, do you hide and run away? What if, every time your mom came into the same room as you, you ran into the kitchen and hid in a cupboard? What if she called your name, and you didn’t say anything. That would be mean!

What if your friend said, “Wanna go play?” and you said, “No!” and ran out the door? That would be rude! If you have a friend, you should want to spend time together, right? You want to talk to each other, not run away and hide!

Well, God is the best friend a person could ever ask for. He’s never mean or rude. He never runs the other way when we want to talk to Him. He doesn’t hide in a cupboard when we go try to talk to Him.

He’s nice! He’s loving! He’s kind! He WANTS to talk to you.

Remember yesterday? God created the whole world, just by talking. He’s a POWERFUL God. He has all the power in all everywhere.

Do you think God’s too busy for you though? No. He loves you.

Do you think, “God’s got other people to worry about. Big, important people. He won’t listen to me?” That’s not true! You are important to God, and He wants to spend time with you.

Do you know how God talks to you?

God talked to Adam directly. And Abraham, and Moses and others. When Jesus was on earth, he spoke and preached and helped people, and His disciples walked with him and watched him every day for three years. When Paul was alive, he saw Jesus in the sky.

Can you hear God’s voice? No. Can you see Jesus right now? No.

But we have something BETTER than hearing His actual voice.

We have the Bible.

God is not hiding from you. He wants you to know Him, so He gave us His Word, the Bible. He speaks to you when you read the Bible. When you see the words in the Bible, you are actually hearing God’s voice!

God has a wonderful story He wants to tell you in His Word. It’s a story about a baby who grew up and…

You’ll just have to see later, when we discover more of God’s story in the Bible.
