Overcoming Temptation

December 11th, 2012

A pastor said he would go on a diet. He prayed, “Lord, if you don’t want me to eat donuts, make all the parking places by the donut shop full.” Later, a friend saw him eating donuts. He said, “I thought you were on a diet!”  The pastor replied, “I prayed for the Lord to not let there be a parking place at the donut shop.  About the 8th time around the parking lot, a place opened up!” That story is funny, but it pretty well illustrates the way we Christians sometimes behave!  We ask the Lord for his help in overcoming temptations, and then we just keep “driving around the block” of the same temptation until we finally see an opening.  God will not hog tie you to keep you from doing wrong, but he most assuredly will help you and provide you a way of escape so that you can overcome the temptations to any sin you struggle with.  It comes down to our own willingness or disobedience to the Lord.   It’s something we must decide to commit ourselves to and to surrender control to our Lord.
