Periodic Reminders

Half the Old Testament is the word Remember. No, that’s not true. It’s 48%. I just rounded up. As Israel forgot, so do we. Today’s insert is a simple reminder of some of the standards we work to maintain as we sing for the Lord. My prayer is that you […]

The Decline of Many Colleges

November 23rd, 2012

World magazine recently reviewed two books which were concerned with the decline of so many colleges into their present anti-Christian positions.  What is profound about the colleges portrayed is that all of them were founded, built and brought to educational prominence by Christians.  One of the books was called The Dying of the Light; the Disengagement of Colleges and Universities from their Christian Churches.  Among the universities discussed were the following:  Beloit College, Syracuse University, Milsap, Davidson, Wake Forest, Vanderbilt, and Dartmouth.  Not directly named in the article, but also included in this group are Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Brown, TCU, Baylor and many others—all once Christian Institutions now devotedly averse to biblical values.  The book documents what happened to them.  First it was love of money.  Wealthy people who were antagonistic to Christianity, such as Andrew Carnegie, offered huge sums to endow these schools if they would distance themselves from distinctively Christian stands.  Second, college presidents began to be chosen for their charisma and influence rather than their biblical values.  The schools moved rapidly from conservative theological positions to liberal theology and then on to secularism.  Third, it was the science department, and their embrace of the religion of Darwin that finished off the declension.

People may think us too dogmatic and narrow-minded about biblical principles and too high-minded about the inerrancy and infallibility of the Bible, but history tells us we are not!  Even today, many once fundamentally-sound Christian colleges are well on their way down the same path as those we’ve mentioned above.  Keep some backbone about you and don’t bend with the secular winds, and God will vindicate your steadfastness.
