Periodic Reminders

Half the Old Testament is the word Remember. No, that’s not true. It’s 48%. I just rounded up. As Israel forgot, so do we. Today’s insert is a simple reminder of some of the standards we work to maintain as we sing for the Lord. My prayer is that you […]

The Preaching Rally

February 12th, 2013

Choir Note-Sunday, February 10, 2013

One of the main points of the Preaching Rally this year will be on music.

The overall concept is summed up in the theme: TIMELESS. We are timeless when we obey God’s Word, and we are wise to choose the timeless over the trendy any day. One major application that we will be focusing on is how to be timeless in our music.

Hymns are a distinctive of our church. Our church tract says, “Still Hymns” on the inside. If the teens can learn to be passionate about the hymns then we are “set” for one more generation. The purpose of the monument in Joshua was for the kids to ask their fathers what the pile of rocks meant. When asked, the fathers would go into detail about the goodness of God in crossing the Jordan river and giving the Israelites their promised land.

My generation must choose to the same timeless paths as our forefathers in the Faith. If we don’t, every new fad will sway the next generation. If there’s no rock on which to anchor our beliefs, then everything that’s new and trendy will always look better than the “old, boring” way. Compared to trendy, the timeless paths will seem a little boring. They’re not new, flashy and exciting!

But… here’s the best part about them… they’ve stood the test. We know they’re anchored on a firm foundation because they’ve worked for numerous generations. If the teens can look past the chink-a-chink guitars that they like in their music today and see that trendy music never lasts, they will appreciate the benefit of choosing the timeless path over the long run. Trendy is always changing. Trendy is only new for a short time. Trendy music is old and boring way too soon, and always has to be reinvented. Since trendy, contemporary Christian music is based on the world’s rhythms and music philosophies, it will always be changing in order to keep up with the trends. Because hymns are based on the unchanging Word of God and emphasize truth over entertainment, they will always be as stable, firm and unchanging as the Truth on which they’re anchored.

When you put it that way, why in the world would we ever want to change?

-Bro. Ryan

MUSIC – Periodically I will try to remind you of this… When you turn in music, please separate your music into individual songs or books and stack accordingly (one separate stack per song.) This will really help those who organize the music. Thank you!
