Monumental Moments In Life

I got home yesterday from preaching a 3-night rally in Colorado. I like the emphasis on kicking off the school year right—with Bible preaching! Today, I’ll be re-preaching all three sermons (not all in Sunday school!) as we think about starting the year strong. Each day is a new beginning […]

Thermostat or Thermometer?

November 25th, 2016

I have a thermostat on my wall at home. Last night, I was making fun of my wife for turning it way down. “So… I’m paying money to run the AC just so I can cover up with blankets?”

“It gets hot at night!”

Ok. I guess.

The thermostat on the wall in the TOF room is usually set to about 69 or 70. When the temperature rises or falls from that, the thermostat adjusts the AC or heater to change the temperature. Some of you don’t like how cold it always is. Sorry about your hypothermia.

On the other hand, a thermometer (or thermo-meter, as I like to call it) tells you what the temperature is. You stick it in your mouth (the old school mercury kind) and count to 8,000 before it finally registers your temperature. Then, you can’t even read the crazy thing. Nowadays, we point a laser at the kid’s forehead and the laser gun speaks to you: “Your body temperature is: 99 degrees.” Thank you, technology.

Spiritually, you are either a thermostat or a thermometer.

  • Thermostat – you CHANGE the spiritual temperature (either hotter or colder, better or worse).
  • Thermometer – you REFLECT the spiritual temperature (you’re “into it” when everyone else is; but cold when they are, too.)

Today, influence others to be more on fire for God.
