Periodic Reminders

Half the Old Testament is the word Remember. No, that’s not true. It’s 48%. I just rounded up. As Israel forgot, so do we. Today’s insert is a simple reminder of some of the standards we work to maintain as we sing for the Lord. My prayer is that you […]

Appearance Matters

You know that.

The way something looks portrays something about it. Good or bad, we all judge.

“Only Judy can judge me” my brother Nathan says.

Too bad. We are all judges, and we can’t help it.

So what kind of image are you portraying when you come to church? Our Man Time/Lady Time has been on appearance and we are discussing this topic: Because we are ambassadors of Christ—made in God’s image—and our bodies are His temple, we should do our part to keep our appearances right. The world does it.

We dress up for important things. We look sharp for things we think are important. You can search online for different styles of clothing like formal, sem-formal, business, casual, informal and other styles and find the appropriate things to wear for each occasion. Is church less than business? Is church… informal (jeans, flip-flops, tshirt)? Business casual (a little nicer)? Formal (tuxedos)?

Well it depends on how much emphasis you place on it. We respect and dress up for funerals. We respect and dress up for meeting the President (and you should see the world’s reactions when people don’t dress up to meet him!). What is important to you?

I liked what one author said: “A good rule of thumb is to always dress up.” Good idea. Appearance matters. This section of our practical time each week is trying to balance going TOO far with this (ie Don’t be obsessed with what you wear) and not going far enough (ie You should know what’s tacky and what’s appropriate to wear).

NO CLASS – In 2 weeks (Jan 2) we will not have class because we will be at the Rendezvous. Everyone will be combined in the sanctuary.

SUBJECT:  Why should man recognize that God is true and man is a liar?

COMPLEMENT:  Because of his faithfulness even when man has not believed.

Because the Jews’ unbelief could not negate God’s faithfulness, they were to recognize him as true.

God is faithful, even when we’re not.

Rom. 3:19-31

Because the law is good to reveal our sin, every man has to replace self-righteousness with God’s righteousness.

The illustrations of the forefathers show that even the best of people cannot stand against their sin but must accept Christ’s payment and believe in Him.

TITLE: You can’t BE or DO. Just accept Him.

TEXT:  Romans 4: 9-12

CIT:  Being a certain nationality and doing a certain set of rules will always be less than free God’s gift.
