Periodic Reminders

Half the Old Testament is the word Remember. No, that’s not true. It’s 48%. I just rounded up. As Israel forgot, so do we. Today’s insert is a simple reminder of some of the standards we work to maintain as we sing for the Lord. My prayer is that you […]

Choir Note- Sunday, July 21, 2013

We’re now back to work. Did you enjoy your week off? I did!

As we return, don’t forget some of “my” fundamentals to your choir experience. A really good, really cool choir director who knows what he’s talking about would have all this insightful musical advice for you… not me. Here are my insights again:

Look Up. All practice. Look up. Catch my eyes. Watch for timing and cutoffs. Watch for dynamics and cues. Hold your book up and peer over the music. Don’t sing down into your lap.

Mark Your Music. Practice with a pencil out all the time. If anything is mentioned, mark it. We have plenty of free pencils available. We have a sharpener. We have erasers. Use them like crazy. Wear them down to the nubbins and then get a new pencil. You should have more pencil than ink on your page (okay, maybe not THAT much!). Remember three things: Mark it. Mark it. And mark it. That’s it.

Smile. I haven’t reminded you of this lately… and it kind of shows. Not to be mean, but some of you just look mad at the world. Don’t get mad. Get glad. A person’s face can magically transform from an ogre to a jolly giant with a simple smile. All it takes is a conscious effort. You’ve got plenty to smile about if you’re thinking about it. I mean… you’re just… saved, right? Smile.
